Justice For Jalil Close Attica -- End Isolation!

Attica ¡§Correctional¡¨ Facility,
January 23, 2012. Jalil Anthony Bottom, a former Black Panther who has
been in prison for more than 40 years, was sentenced to SIX MONTHS IN
ISOLATION (called SHU or Special Housing Unit) on charges of
¡§Unauthorized Organization¡¨ for possession of PHOTOS OF MEMORIAL
SERVICES FOR 2 FORMER BLACK PANTHERS.
We call on Governor Cuomo, the NYS Legislature, the Attorney
General¡¦s Office, and the Department of so-called ¡§Corrections¡¨:
ATTICA = ABUSE. SHUT IT DOWN!
¡§Attica has clearly been unable to cast off its violent past, and has proven, time and time again,
to be an unsafe and inhumane place for prisoners... The only possible remedy is to close
the facility.¡¨ --The Correctional Association of New York, the only prison watchdog group
allowed to investigate inside New York¡¦s prisons
ISOLATION = TORTURE. END IT!
¡§Long term solitary confinement in excess of 15 days could amount to torture and should be
banned.¡¨ -- Juan E. Mendez, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture. New York State
locks people in solitary at almost twice the national rate.
REVERSE JALIL¡¦S DISCRIMINATORY TICKET AND INCREDIBLE 6-MONTH SENTENCE.
A six-month sentence for having photos of a memorial service exposes the arbitrary and cruel
use of SHU for targeting, harassment, and abuse at the whim of prison staff & administrators.
STRIKE DOWN THE ¡§UNAUTHORIZED ORGANIZATIONS¡¨ REGULATION, written so
vaguely that it is impossible for prisoners to know how to avoid violating it, making it the basis
for suppression of ideas the prison administration disagrees with.
